USING logitech z-5500 for a home theater?

SofaKing

Banned
I'm planning to buy a set of logitech z-5500's for my home theater.. I want to use it for my TV and DVD player, but is that possible? If so, how? My TV is a sony 55-in KDFE55A20..

If I used this as the basis for audio for my home theater, would it perform well? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

With a TV like that, why the fvck are you using z5500s. That is fvcking retarded.

Moving on, well since that TV has optical out, you could simply run it to your digital control center. Then you could run digital coaxial from your DVD player to your control center. Bam, done.

Sorry, I'm a noob when it comes to home theater audio and stuff. Is it not good enouhg for the TV? What are some cheap, good home theater audio systems you recommend? Preferably under $400..

Cheaper Onkyo 502 (ecost is so unorganized) EDIT: ground shipping showed up as $7.50 for me? :Q (+ $7 "handling fee")

You're going to need to get some speakerwire and an RCA cable to connect up the speakers and sub to the receiver.
You can get 18 gauge speakerwire for cheap from walgreens even. Or a couple rolls from partsexperss

SofaKing, what do you mean "would those perform up to the full capabilities of my TV?"

I think that's about the best you're going to do in your pricerange.

Alternative HTIB solutions:
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Onkyo-Ho...m/oid/119865/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=42.1

You might be able to do a little better if you go with used for the speakers, but that receiver is a good deal and the sub is definately the way to go.

I had the SX-HTB set before I got my rockets and I was happy with them for the price.

Thanks for finding that deal on the Onkyo! I'm getting $7.50 for shipping also (the other Onkyo 502 refurb you showed me in my topic had $35 shipping).

Is 18ga wire good enough? I thought I read that 16ga is where you want to be. Though for $2 for 50ft., I think I'd be okay (I could just buy 4 and use two connections per speaker if I wanted to, right? Would I even need to?).

Sorry for the threadjacking.

EDIT: SofaKing, how big is your room? The Z-5500s are supposed to be able to get very loud, but it would probably help others help you (as you can tell by the above, I'm new to all this as well) if you could give room dimensions.

Speaker wire info

I'm running five 50 foot lengths of 12 gauge myself. I would cut them to length, but I've used my speakers in three different locations over the past year and a half, so I'm keeping them that length until I settle down. When I got my first real speakers they were all 8 ohm, not I have a mix of 4 ohm and 6 ohm, so I'm glad I went with some thicker stuff.

This sounds like a stupid question. I've been looking hard for pc speakers. If I were to buy this under 400.00 HT setup it would also work for my PC and Gaming ect. better than the logitech right? I have until today to order these Fluance speakers as they go up in price tonight a response from anyone confirming this would be a great help. I'm very A?V inexperienced and was waiting to have someone throw together a reasonably priced system for me so this thread was a godsend. I'll buy the speakers this week, the sub next and the reciever last.

depends on the placement of your setup. You don't want 5.5" woofer bookshelf speakers 12 inches from your head. That's what near-field computer speakers are for.

Thats true I guess. I'd like a good system for gaming music and well...everything. I don't have much $$ at all. All of my music is on MP3 . In your opinion could I place them in such a way as to make this a good purchase. Many of the comments I get whan asking which PC speakers to buy are " don't get pc speakers they are crap even a cheap hometheatre setup would sound much better. I also watch movies on my computer in which case I wouldn't be sitting in front of the speakers. I get what your saying it's just that I can only afford 1 system not a stereo , a pc setup and a hometheatre. If you were in my shoes what would you do?

Ouch! 70.00 S+H

If you're on a really tight budget it might be better to just stick with high end computer speakers especially if a computer is going to be you're only source.

To get a Fluance set going, you're looking at $300-ish for speakers, $150 for a sub, and $150 or more for a receiver. $600 is a lot more than what a Klipsch promedia set costs for example.

For gaming, computer speakers work a little easier than a HT set as I mentioned in your X-Fi thread.

Whether going budget HT or staying with computer speakers is about your budget.

There are also several budget options out there besides Fluance, but I had the SX-HTB set before I got my Onix Rockets and I thought they were a good deal.

Although...with floorstanders you don't really need a sub : P

Especially if you are comparing bass output of PC speakers.

If it's for HT use, I would really recommend a sub.

I'm in the unenviable position of wanting to do it all on an extreme budget. I suppose I have a couple of days within which to cancel my speaker order if thats what I should do. I really liked the klipsch's but so many people were having trouble with thier amp's dying and then to only have a years warranty. It seemed as if the HT setup would work as easily while being modular so if any 1 thing failed the whole works won't be shot. But it is becoming clear that it's not really going to be that easy or flexible. I was just thinking how much better MDF enclosures and well..."real" speakers would sound, but perhaps you're right. I'd just hate to have them die in a year and for some reason I was thinking 400.00 HT setup would be cost about the same as the Creatives which it would seem would be the best choice. While Logitech's certainly are inexpensive. But you're right in that this is topping $600.00
I sure appreciate all the help here guys, thanks alot. Vektor5

You can make a $400 set, but it's going to be pretty difficult.

If you skip the sub you could do it possibly depending on shipping costs.

It generally will be better if you get a entry level 5.1 system, but it's going to be more than a computer set.

An Onkyo 780

or

Rocket tyke

set would be cheaper than your proposed system. I believe both those receivers don't have 6 channel direct input though as we were talking about in your other thread.

Don't get me wrong though, I was quite happy I went with a Fluance set for what it cost me.

Maybe start off with a refurb onkyo 502 and the SX-HTB+ set and then add a sub later as funds allow?

As the Onkyo has the 6 channel direct I think I'll just skip digital altogether and everything should work. The sub is only 150.00 so I'll get that at a later date. This way when I get a DVD player I can also have an entry level 5.1 HT as well as an excellent PC speaker setup. Thanks again, I had no idea what to order for a HT system and have been studying PC speakers and looking for deals/inspiration for weeks now. The lightbulb really went off after reading your thread. I have a friend who's opinion I value and asked him which PC speakers I should get and he said apathetically : to paraphrase : I don't like any of them(he has an older pair of videologic) they are all plastic and won't hold up to even cheap "real" speakers. So I'm very grateful.

Check out AVSforum if you're looking for more inspiration. My HT pics look like crap compared to most of the sets over there.

Yeah, coz you'll see all these incredibly beautiful speakers like the Paradigm Signatures, JM Lab Utopias, and the Swan 6.2s

And feel so bad that you can't afford it ; \

Well entry-level full-size home theater sound 🙂

You managed to avoid Home Theater In a Box and Bose at the same time!
