Using klinux along with windows machines

I want to try the Klinux, but I have no idea how to connect it up to my exisiting network, which consists of:

1. A cable modem hooked up to my wife's Win98SE machine with "internet connection sharing" enabled.
2. A second network card in my wife's computer hooked up to a hub, allowing all my other machines to hook up the the internet.

I would think that klinux wouldn't be able to use Microsoft's internet connection sharing. However, I guess that MS sharing must dynamically assign IP addresses to my other computers. Will Klinux work with this? I guess I can just give it a try. I've been very happy with MS internet connection sharing, it is much more compatible than other proxy servers that I have used.

How do most people go about sharing an internet connection between klinux and Windows machines? Is a router the way to go? Or would I be better off setting up my Win2K machine as the server, with some proxy server software like Wingate, etc...?

Thanks for any help.

All Klinux needs (apart aa cpu and supported NIC) is

- an IP so it can communicate. If your internet sharing has a DHCP server, klinux should find it and be assigned a valid IP ; if not, it will stop trying after 3-4 fails and ask you for an IP. I have a DHCP that klinux doesnt detect and use the 2nd way.

- a pproxy to talk to. If you set up your ICS machine as the gateway in klinux, it should be able to use it to communicate with the net. But IMO it is best to set a pproxy on one of your comps, and have klinux talk to it. This way you can monitor your klinux nodes, which you cant if they dump direct to dnet (or TA RR).

heh heh... what LeBlatt said! Sounds exactly like my setup? Cable modem connected to a Linksys modem/router... 2 PCs running Win98 and a hub connected to the router, two Klinux PCs attacted to the hub... sometimes the DHCP works, and sometimes it doesn't... no rhyme or reason!

Well, I guess I have to just try things out:

1) Hook up the klinux machines to my hub and hope that it can see Microsoft's ICS as a DHCP server.

or

2) I have a router at work that I can borrow. I'll try hooking up the router in between my hub and cable modem and hook my KLinux machine to the hub. This "should" work, I would guess.

Geoff, when DHCP doesn't work through the router, you then just manually enter the IP address?

Yep. That's what I do with mine! :) I don't use DHCP on my home herd.

<< I guess entering 192.168.1.1 isn't so bad >>

:D neither is 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.1.3 all the way to 192.168.1.253 :D

It works really well with my Win/Linux network at the shop.

If everything is setup right, Klinux will connect to any pproxy on the internet you want.

OK, I spent all night getting my $%^#%#%# Linksys router to work. Gertting it set up was not obvious at all, I had to search long and hard on the internet to figure out how to get the settings right. DHCP didnt seem to work with the router, so I had to give my windows machines static IPs.

Now to hook up the klinux machines!

kmmatney,
Sorry you had so much trouble with the LinkSys router. I was off and on the forum last night, I could have helped if you had posted. :(

If you have any additional problems or questions, be sure to post them so we can help. :)

ICS has a DHCP server as part of it - thats why it tells you to set other machines connected to it to set the IP address as automatically configured (cant remember the exact phrasing). So, theoretically, Klinux should detect the DCHP and all should be hunky dory :)

kmmatney,

I would hope that they get along.:D I have two crack racks, (total of 17 nodes), all running Klinux, three full blown Linux boxes, and six Windows systems (four 98SE, one Me, and one Win2K) all plugged in to a Linksys router dishing up DHCP.

<< DHCP didnt seem to work with the router, so I had to give my windows machines static IPs. >>

Did you REMOVE ICS first? You can't have two DHCP servers on the same physical segment. Also, did you configure the router for enough IP addresses? I think the default max is five.
