Is it possible to load and view music on the ipod shuffle without itunes? Im just curious on how one would accomplish this? I couldnt install itunes on my laptop but when i plugged in the new nano it saw it as a drive. I copied music to it but when i looked at the nano i cannot see the songs unless its plugged into the computer. Any help is appreciated.

i don't know about the shuffle but the 3rd gen regular sized ipod was able to use 3rd party software. Ephpod was what i used when i had mine.

i don't see why it would be any different for the other models.

I really recommend getting itunes to work to avoid any frustration etc. But yea ephpod worked with my 4g 20gb ipod. I now have a 2g shuffle and 2g nano, dunno if it works with them though. Theres quite a few itunes alternatives, google emm and see.

I have never installed Itunes for my shuffle. I just use Mediamonkey with Ipod Plug-in and everything works perfectly, with the added bonus of not having to darken my PC with Quicktime

I just got a $50 Itunes gift card though, so I may have to download Itunes after all :(

Edit: to add Thumbs down to Quicktime

I tried the free version of Anapod and I liked the interface because it was pretty much just like a Windows explorer window.

I got pwned though... I used Anapod to edit a bunch of info such as artist / song title, album, etc and when I plugged the thing back into the other PC that had iTunes, iTunes overwrote everything that I had changed :(

Also, the version of Anapod that I tried did not have the cd-ripping function that iTunes had and I'm not sure if the paid version does either.

I would say that it is a decent iPod manager but only when used on its own.

Theres a bunch of thrid-party sync software that works with Ipods.
We usually have threads on this once a month or so.

hmmmm so does the ipod plugin for winamp media management work different ly than all of these?? the issue I had was that when I plugged in her ipod winamp saw it fine and transfered files just fine, but when you disconnect and go through the menu on the ipod, you dont see any of the music listed. When I ook it to a mahcine that had itunes installed and worked through the wizard then you saw all the music. I really dont want itunes on the main mahcine where she will be getting the music from so this is why i asked.... I did not know if you had to initialize the ipod with itunes first or anything. I have a 5g 30GB that has been in its box for 3 months and I havent even played with yet but i wanted to know all this before I did.

Not sure what you mean about disconnecting the Ipod and going through the menu.

However, if you use the Mediamonkey plugin I suggested you will see the Ipod on the left hand menu tree and if you click on it all the music on the Ipod will show. From there you can move your music using drag & drop or whatever you want to do.

Good point, never really thought about it I guess. Would be less painful than installing and downloading from Itunes.

Sorry was I was tyring to say is this is what happened lass night:
First scenario
Plug in ipod to PC, fire up winamp and winamp sees ipod. In the media library I can drag and drop music onto the ipod no problem.

Unplug Ipod and go to the menu , music, just to list the music available and its completely blank. If I plug ipod back into the computer I see the music, but I I look on the ipod itself away form the pc everything is blank.

Second scenario
Plug in ipod to a pc. install itunes. itunes wants to add the music to its library so we did that. you can drag and drop music from there to the ipod no problem.

unplug ipod and go to the menu, and all the music shows up!

Thats why im confused :)

Odd

Does the Ipod play the music, just not show it? (I assume not) What about if you look at available space on the Ipod, what does that show?

I have never used Winamp and I have never seen this problem with the programs I use, but hopefully we can figure this out...so weird.

Would you be willing to try Mediamonkey? Maybe see if that works for you.

Wow... It's like an AOL customer asking if they can use the internet without AOL :D

Anyway... hehehe... Try ephpod. It's simple and free.

The situation you described is because of this - drag and drop stuff onto the ipod and it will act as a storage device. But it will not play stuff stored on it the way almost every single other music player will. No, that would be too simple... let's... "innotive". Let's "think different" No, music has to be put in a hidden folder and renamed in a certain way for ipods to play it. This is what itunes and 3rd party apps like anapod and ephpod do.

Well that may be true, but not in this situation (at least if I am reading what the OP is saying correctly). If the Ipod is being recognized in Winamp or Mediamonkey, you can drag and drop to it through those programs and it it plays fine (at least it does for me). This is different than using it as just a storage device.

Of course I may just be wayyy of base here, but I don;t think so. :D

Would do, but I don't think it would work for you. I'm Canadian so I assume I would need to sell it to another Canadian.

Sorry.

sure i have tried media monkey before and liked it, i was just trying to use winamps library because I love winamp so much but maybe not for this. from what i understood about the plugin it is supposed to work just like anapod or ephpod, in fact there was a long thread about aqll of those last year . Im just confused as to why its not working, but i will try the other suggestions....besides on the 2 5g ipods i have im thinking of going rockbox anyway so this might all be moot . i just wanted to give my sister a way to use it wihtout my jacking with the ipod itself
