Is there any brand/type of CF that you guys recommend?

It said max watt to use is 60w, but I just put in a 100w. I've done this before and I've noticed the bulb just burns out in 1/2 the time. Is there a risk of a fire?

Your ballast still has a transformer in it. That's what a ballast is. 😛Originally posted by: element

The only potential problem is the heat. The bulb shouldn't be burning out any quicker, unless they're just cheap bulbs. If you want long life, go w/ a compact florecent. Then you can get one that is the light equivalent to over 100w (it'll be about 25w) and not worry about the heat.
The reason the bulb is burning out faster is likely due to the heat build up. The fixture is rated 60W max for a reason. It's usually to prevent damage to the fixture from the heat but in this case it appears to be to prevent damage to the bulb.
And yeah CF bulbs are great. Been using them since before anyone ever mentioned them on here. i've also got flourescent ceiling fixtures that have the newer electronic ballast (instead of a transformer) and an off white yellowish color so they have no noticable flicker and the color matches regular bulbs so It's like an incandescent without the heat and waste of power. 30 watts with the light equivalent of a 150W incandescent.
