Using higher watt bulb in lamp.

I have some old globe style GE CF bulbs still working, they're so heavy & big they didn't fit in most light fixtures...

Yup. Did that in college by accident. The solder joints for the wires melted due to the extra heat. Made a nice heart attack. Didn't know what was wrong, so I replaced the bulb and plugged the lamp back in. BANG! Almost had second heart attack. Took the lamp appart and found out what happened. Garbage...

EDIT: Now I own a home and when I need extra light, I use the energy efficent bulbs. They draw like 1/3 of the power and don't get as hot.

The reason the bulb is burning out faster is likely due to the heat build up. The fixture is rated 60W max for a reason. It's usually to prevent damage to the fixture from the heat but in this case it appears to be to prevent damage to the bulb.

And yeah CF bulbs are great. Been using them since before anyone ever mentioned them on here. i've also got flourescent ceiling fixtures that have the newer electronic ballast (instead of a transformer) and an off white yellowish color so they have no noticable flicker and the color matches regular bulbs so It's like an incandescent without the heat and waste of power. 30 watts with the light equivalent of a 150W incandescent.
Your ballast still has a transformer in it. That's what a ballast is. 😛

Electronic ballast doesn't use a transformer to step up the voltage. The old ballasts used to use a transformer, you can hear the hum from them. Transformers work by magnetic induction.

You don't hear a hum from electronic ones for that reason.
