using gameport-to-usb with old joysticks

anyone know if it's possible to get old joysticks (in my case, a microsoft sidewinder 3d pro, and a thrustmaster grand prix 1 driving wheel) to work in win2k (or winXP, for that matter) using a gameport-to-usb adapter? even if i try to add a joystick, it will say that my gameport isn't properly configured, but that's because i don't have an actual physical gameport; i have a USB slot with the joystick plugged in via the gameport-to-usb adapter. i don't have a soundcard; i'm using onboard sound. i'm guessing it's because the joysticks are not HID compliant so windows doesn't detect them, or something. so what can i do? i've tried googling for usb gameport drivers but i can't seem to find what i need. i think what i need is something which will get windows to see my USB port as a gameport. at least, that's what i think i need. or maybe i need something that will make non-HID compliant joysticks become magically HID compliant :roll: any ideas?

I must be dense, but I read your post 4 times
and I don't understand your problem.

Do you want to connect a USB joystick to a gameport in Win 2K???

Are you certain the mainboard lacks a gameport expansion plug for use with a bracket? If so it seems you have covered everything and it just ain't do-able so if you're so attached (pun intended) to the gameport controllers then consider a $10 soundcard with a gameport (in lieu of a seperate card as I imagine they are nigh impossible to find), with the added bonus of improved audio and performance.
