Using drones to catch crooks = ok. Using drones to catch speeders = not ok.

Drones? What a waste, they should in used in Iraq/n or some other ME shithole.

For America, just install a mandatory GPS device linked to the owner's credit card. The moment some criminal commits speeding, instantly charge the credit card. Increment the charges based on past behavior, make sure to add convenience fees. Send location data to local cops for preventive enforcement. Peaceful and law-abiding Americans should have nothing to worry about!
I know you're joking, but more or less this will be the future. Speeding already is much harder than it was 20 years ago or 40 years ago. Another 20 from now it wouldn't surprise me at all if, at least on highways, it's completely a thing of the past.

Committing a crime makes you a criminal. Most traffic offenses are civil infractions, not crimes. So speeders are civil infractioners or something.

If it is a civil infraction; then why can arrest warrants be issued?

So they just ticket the car so it's basically the primary owner who has to pay? I guess that could work, in most cases the users of the car are in the same household so it's up to the family to pay the ticket. They could maybe have a shot where they get a picture of the driver and that could be sent with the ticket, though depending on windchill angle to the camera, the weather, etc wont always get a clear shot.

They'd have to figure something out for rentals though, guess the rental company could go back after whoever was the renter at the time of the ticket. I'm guessing there would be a date/time stamp on it.

Rentals do the same with parking tickets.

I wouldn't mind if it was 100% ticket for speeding. If you know you're going to get a ticket you know not to speed.

Speeders are crooks.
Speeding is breaking the law. Breaking the law makes you a criminal.

That being said, I disagree with the use of drones for monitoring civilian populations for any reason.
sir i dont think i like you very much, by calling all speeders crooks. you've never seen a road that has a really low speed limit for no reason other than to generate revenue?

I think all speed limits should be increased, but they should be enforced more.

So many people speed where I live, but the limits are also very low, and that's probably the issue everywhere. People who may not agree with the limits but still want to abide by the rules get run off the road by the people who don't care and go 20+ over the limit, and they're hardly enforced so they don't get stopped.
You can't increase the limits too much. You have to tailor them to the lowest common denominator. Sure, plenty of people can drive safely at 80 mph but there are too many people out there who can't and posting limit of 80 makes it harder to prosecute them when they drive faster than their brains can handle and they hurt someone.

Evidence on where it is stated that the intent of the low speed limit is solely for revenue purposes.

Speed limits are set to ensure public safety.
while you may be able to run at 80-90 mph; the road is not safe for congestion at that speed.
Visibility lanes and accident rates also contribute to assigning the speed limits.

IANAL but I don't think you can get a warrant for speeding. Maybe for not paying your tickets, but not for speeding.

When you are ticketed; you sign the summons indicating that you will show up in court or will pay the fine.

Failure to do either will get you a warrant or time in the pokey.

Much would depend on how the laws/rules are written.

Breaking the law is criminal.
Breaking a rule is not.

Again, the warrant in that case would be for failure to appear in court, not for speeding.

I disagree, most highway here are set to 65, these road are safe witha speed limit of 100 mph though. The 65 is to generate revenue.

Every state I travel in the Midwest you can safely go 7 over and cops won't even give you the time of day. I'm not to crazy about an unmanned drone flown by an RC wannebe monitoring traffic.

I remember when radar jammers came out and were the thing to have. Now I guess this generation of new drivers will need to invest in drone jammers.

65 is a reasonable compromise due to congestion on the road.

Higher speeds start to reduce the margin of error.
DOT takes into account accident frequency, road surface, road conditions, line of sight, max congestion, lanes, medians and other factors when setting the limits.

You dont get an arrest warrant for speeding. You get an arrest warrant for failure to pay the ticket.

But quite a few are actually class c misdemeanors.

And breaking rules(say federal regs) can lead to criminal charges if fines go unpaid.

Rules that have fines, can always lead to criminal charges for failure to pay/contempt.

if they raise the speed limits, people are just going to complain that those are too slow and then they will start speeding again.
This tired old argument has been thoroughly debunked.

Educate yourself on how speed limits are set in the first place. Hint: They are deliberately set slower than most people drive.

Has anybody ever been issued a citation based on their speed being monitored by aircraft? I see the signs out on the freeway but always have guessed that they're just for show.

That is not true for the vast majority of people, most will drive what they think is comfortable and that will be a similar speed for most. There have been many studies done on this. You can then set the speed limit a little bit higher than the speed most would normally drive on that road then you get a good "speed limit".

Common sense is not allowed to prevail, not as long as we have republicans or democrats 🙂

the aircraft work with ground units of course, and yes they do this in some areas
