Using Cat6 Crossover Adapter

Ok guys i need to transfer files from my laptop to Desktop PC. I have Ethernets ports on both PC's, now i got 1 PC connected to a wireless router. I was wondering if it is possible to use one of those Cat6 Crossover Adapter with my current Ethernet cable. And is there any disadvantage in using such an adapter ???

Nope, have at it!

Just keep in mind you'll need to setup networking services to share the files (IP addresses, etc.)

If you have a Gig NIC in one of the computers chances are that you will not even need it. Most Gig NICs do auto MDI-X.

ALL 1000 Base-T nics do auto mdi-x. It's part of the standard.

Ok you lost me there whats with the Gig NIC ?.? Is it something got to do with Gigabit Motherboad Ethernet port? Because my motherboard is the Abit IP35

If the two NIC are 100Mb/sec. you need a crossover cable to connect direct.

Adapter like the one you linked to can help to convert a straight patch to act as crossover.

However if the NIC is Giga NIC, Crossover cable is Not needed since Giga NICs are designed to sense the type of connection and revert inside to Crossover configuration regardless of the external cable.

The CAT6 naming on the adapter that you linked to is a mistake, or a result of an ignorant designer.

Ok is there a way of knowing if one has a Giga NIC ?? bcoz my laptop has a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC dont know about the desktop ??? Anyways according to the NewEgg site the Abit Onboard LAN has a Max LAN Speed Dual 10/100/1000Mbps and i think Realtek has a 10mb/s and 100mb/s.

Giga NIC = Gigabit capable NIC, which you have.. So you are good. Since you are transferring from a laptop, cat6 isn't really needed. 10-12 MB/sec (thats megabytes, not bits) is going to be the top speed for you; and that assumes that the laptop HD is decent, the files are defraged, and that the files are not large amounts of small files, but rather small amounts of large files. How do you not have a router/switch? Don't forget to set your power settings to not kick it into suspend if you are away from the computer.

Well i never thought i needed it. An honestly i dont because i dont usually transfer files between 2 PC. Its just that i need to reinstall XP on the Laptop. Well anyways i a lil confused here do i or do i not need a crossover cable to transfer files. Because like i said before i only have a regular Ethernet cable that came with my wireless route and my cable modem.....

you said you have a wireless router, so why not just hook up both the pc and the laptop to your wireless router?

HUH !!! i dont think i can do that with mine its a Netgear Wireless G Router Model: WGR614.......Link Here If you think i can is there a guide i can follow because i have no idea ??? Ohh and i dont have Wi-Fi on the Desktop

MAN THANKS a Lot for your help i just took the usual wires and connected my Desktop and Laptop without a problem. Woot! Thanks you guys saved me some ($.$). Unfortunately the speed reaches only 5mb/s ....that sucks!!
