I am using free trial versions of AOL and Juno as a temporary means to access the net until I get my dsl back up. However, I keep getting these grey pop up ads advertising anything from porno pages to penis size to other bogus crap. I have scanned for viruses and removed any spyware with adaware and spybot, but these damn grey boxes keep appearing. What are they from?

Windows Messenger. Disable it.

right-click My Computer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services

look for messenger. Disable it. Double-click it and set startup type as disabled.

It says messenger service. How do I disable it. Is it one of those lines in startup of msconfig?
