Using an older Linksys router as a switch and a WAP

My dad gave me an old Linksys router (model BEFW11S4) to take up to college. Using it as a router doesn't work because you have to be registered on the campus subnet to gain internet access. It works fine as a switch for my desktop, but I'm having trouble using it as an access point for my laptop. It connects fine, but it can't seem to receive proper IP configuration. I've tried setting static IP settings similar to what my desktop was assigned by the schools DHCP server and that didn't work. Any suggestions?

When it configured as Swicth with an Access Point it up to the campus network to provide additional IPs and manage them.

If the campus system does no allow, or would no do it, there is nothing that you can do about it.
