Using an LCD TV as a monitor?

Basically, I was wondering what a 1080p LCD TV would be like to use as a PC monitor.
Also, I assume a 1080p LCD TV just runs a pc at 1920 x 1200.
But what about LCD TV's that can do 1080i but has a resolution of only 1366x768?
Is'nt 1080i 1920 x 1200 aswell?

Basically I just want an LCD TV 26-37" that can work as a PC monitor operating at 1920 x 1200.
I dont care if it's 1080p or i just need to know that it can muster 1920 x 1200 from a PC.
Anyone know any?

And does it have to be 1080p capable, or will a 1080i capable LCD TV do the job?

The 1080 in HDTV display modes is the vertical resolution. 1080i/p = 1920x1080.

Why not just buy a Dell LCD monitor instead? It might be cheaper that way, unless this TV is also for other things, like actual television, DVDs, console games, etc (though all of this can be done through your PC and consoles can output to most modern computer LCDs or use a TV tuner card).

If you want to use an LCD TV for text and such, a 1080p display is probably a good idea. You could get away with a lower res one, but a 1080p one would give you a lot more area to work with and you'd be able to have it closer without looking at huge pixles :p

For gaming, you could do a lower res one and still get very good results.

Soul Colossus is right about 1080p being 1920x1080. 1920x1200 is the res for some monitors because they are 16:10 rather than 16:9.

LCDs are progressive displays, so "1080i" ones are taking an interlaced signal and then deinterlacing it into a progressive image. You should basically look at native resolution rather than the kind of inputs it can take. That said, you should make sure that a 1080p display you get can actually take a 1080p input. I don't remember if that was ever an issue on LCDs this size or not though.

Westinghouse makes some solid displays you might want to consider. You could try searching around here as I know there are a few threads about them.

AVSforum would be another good resource for you.

Thanks for the responses.
The only reason I ask is because I've heard some bad reports of 360 gaming on Dell 2407FPW's or any other 24" monitor for that matter.
Colour issues, 1:1 pixel mapping errors etc. So I figured, I could just buy a bigger 1080p TV and use that as a monitor and a more suitable console gaming screen.

I have a westinghouse 37" 1080P monitor and it is amazing.

The only concern is that you need more distance from the monitor, mine is two feet away on a stand.

I purchased mine on newegg, and as I said, the only word for it is amazing.

30" @ 1366 X 768 is nearly the same as 37" 1920 X 1080 once your adjust the distance you sit from a screen. Screen resolution, pixel size are all relative based on view distance. Not a lot of people understand that...

I currently have a 30" LCD that does 1280 X 768 and even though I get a quick urge to upgrade to a bigger screen I always remind myself "Why, you would just have to move back another 6 inches" and then I remember that the screen is already taking up most of my viewable area. Then the upgrade urge leaves me and I am still left happy with a nice display that doesn't take an SLI rig to run it! :D

Anyway, whether you get a 42" 60" or 27", know that you are in for a huge treat... It works great as a monitor. I used mine to read online, game and do what else I want to do. Everyone I know who has used an LCD-TV as a monitor has been pretty damn happy with it. Pictures do not do it justice, you need to see it for yourself.
