Using an ipod as a phone?

I thought I read something a while back about being able to use an ipod touch (newest generation) to make phone calls. Just got my son one for christmas and was curious how to do this.

Is there any way to do this without jailbreaking or hacking?

A VoIP client, such as Skype as said, should be able to work.

For work extensions, 3CX phone or other PBX client could work also. I think also Cisco has a softphone for its PBX profile software, which is available on iOS.

um, everyone has mentioned skype.

or are you just trolling

Buy a new one of these...

There will come a day when you have been a member here for more than 5 months and have made more than 1,358 posts when you will realize how foolish you just made yourself look.

Then again, you may never realize it.

An alternative is to sign up to a free SIP account, and download the client softphone on the machine. FonoSIP and SIP2SIP are good ones.

ignore all the people in this thread as they don't know what they are talking about.

Use skype to make your ipod touch into a quasi phone.

You guys are really no help. I ended up googling and found a program called "Skype". Thanks for nothing.

OK, seriously. Couple followup questions. Some mentioned Google Voice for texting. I was under the impression the "new" iMessage or whatever it's called does texts fro free. What is the difference in iMessage and GV?

So, to use skype does the receiver of the phone call also have to have skype? I've googled a bit and see mention that to use skype you have to either have a headset or always talk on speakerphone. So, I guess the ipod touch doesn't have a built in speaker similar to the iphone?

Thanks for the help.
