Using an ATM in a different country

I'm going to be headed down to Disney World from Toronto and I'm wondering I should be taking out cash or using the ATM down there to minimize any fees.

I already have USD in one of my accounts but I'm not sure if my debit card will be able to pull money from an account that I choose, or if it goes to a "primary" account only?

Wondering if I could get a response before heading to the bank

You can use ATMs in foreign countries and they give reasonable exchange rates. You should be able to access any accounts that are online in your own country.

dont be too sure, call your bank and ask them what the fees are for ATM international transactions..

Additionally, you might want to ask about notifying them you'll be out of country. I don't really do foreign travel, but a withdraw could be blocked due to fraud prevention. Maybe they can flag your account to expect transactions from Disney World.

+1 on above comments. ATM's in many countries give the best exchange rates. Just know your fee schedule ahead of time (if applicable). Ive used my ATM card in 8 different countries...not a big deal.

Yeah, I think that's what I'm going to do. It'll probably be a little bit cheaper than using a CC.

I find my credit card is cheaper in the US. Similar exchange rates, and the ATM charges a 3-4 dollar fee every time I use it.

Most of them warn you that you will be charged a fee. The Bank of America down the street from me did not warn me.

Reminded me of this story:

In about 1990, my brother came to visit me at college in Orange County, California. He was living in New Jersey at the time and had an ATM card from a New Jersey bank.

He tried to take money out of a local ATM and it spit his card out and shut down the ATM. We went to the next ATM and the same thing happened.

We had a little time to kill, so we shut down the 10 or so of the closest ATMs for the evening.

good advice in this thread.

at least in my own experience, many/most banks and credit cards in the US have foreign transaction fees (I think it's something like 3% on my Amazon visa, but no fees on my United card)

When I go to the States I always use the Bank of America machines. They seem to give the best rates and no additional fees.

lol thats awesome

i did something like that once too, but instead of ATMs they were outhouses, and instead of shutting them down i locked the door from the outside

That's what I thought at first. Then I checked my bank account and they took out 3 dollars each time. They just didn't tell me about the fee at the bank machine.

I have never seen this charge (nor has my lady and she is super anal on that stuff); I check my statements monthly. I am with RBC, so maybe it's different depending on who you bank with?

Yeah it could be. Mine is CIBC. The charge was on my statement both times immediately after my withdrawl. I just checked, it was 3 dollars, not 4.
