My company has recently been break in. I have now decided to establish some sort of security system. A secuirty company gave me a quote of $7500:Q. Basically it involes forur cameras and server with dedicated internet connection. That guy said I can "check from home", and I suspect what he is doing is simply settnig up a server to upload the video.

Anywyas, I can not afforf the hefty fees. Is there a way for me to do the same thing with a cmputer and 4 webcams ?

I know webcamXP will work with multiple cameras and has a built-in http server. There's a free version and also a pro version for $30. Maybe it'll do what you're wanting.

Easily. Just setup 4 cameras which will feed into a main computer, then broadcast each camera on a different URL. Just keep all 4 windows open at a time if you please, or cascade them across the screen so you can see all 4 movies. It won't be as fancy as there's, but it'll get the job done. You shouldn't spend over $500 or so if you do it like that.

for that price you can have a massive system.. screw 7500.. he is nuts..

you can go more than that.. you can use multiple camera's and get teh same result.. how much is your budget?

4 cameras and a computer will more than work.. its quite easy when you got the hardware to cooperate.

check out www.dlink.com

go to their multimedia section.. they got cameras that have internet access.. you can surf up to them if youw ant.. but what's best is that they got motion sensors and when it does find some motion it records as MPEG4.. and you can send it to the server (for later checking)...

call Dlink support / sales they will talk you thru and help you how to get this thing working the way you want..

Dlink sales and support is awesome.. I setup something similar for a client.. needless to say Dlink sales / support came thru for me.

As much as we hate their popup ads, they do have great products.

There's no reason if he did setup a system that he couldn't have one page load all the images instead of 4 seperate pages. We've all seen systems do this.

My question is, will cameras really help? I obviously don't know the layout of your place, but will a regular security system be enough?

I can understand the fear that a burglary brings but you might want to make sure you're making a logical choice and not letting your emotions get the best of you. Might be cheaper in the long run.
