Using a palm's infrared

I was wondering if it's possible for a Palm's infrared port to replicate an infrared port for your desktop? so instead of shelling out $50+ for an infrared port adapter, to similate a port with a Palm connected via serial port... if so what software and stuff? been looking around everywhere and havne't really found a solution...
 
NewEgg sells IrDA ports from Epox. I'm sure they are much cheaper than $50. These ada[ters will fit in an empty drive bay.

I believe the more elaborate DigiDoc-like gadgets also have IrDA.
