Heat is not unbearable but it gets pretty hot sometimes. And if they think cell phones might cause cancer does a laptop pose the same problem for that area?

I've never used a laptop on my lap long enough to be worried about the heat. And I don't think laptops are capable of putting out ionizing radiation, neither are cell phones for that matter.

Well, I dunno about "cool". The Dell kid will run really slow due to all the bloat, and have cheap plastic pieces that break off, the Compaq kid will suddenly die for no reason whatsoever, the IBM kid will work well, but look 30 years old and boring, and the Sony kid will explode unexpectedly.
