Using a crossover cable

Can anyone help me get this process going. I'm trying to retrieve data from one computer to store on another. I thought I'd be able to browse the hard drive by simply plugging the computers together but no such luck. Do I need a program to do this? BTW, this is an ethernet type cable. Thanks for any help
 
Under network properties, go to TCP/IP properties, and make sure everything is on automatic on both computers. Make sure both network cards are enabled. Share the C drive on the correct computer. Also, under network properties, go to the properties of the lan connection, and install IPX protocall. Then you should be able to transfer files.
 
If both cards are gigabit Ethernet you don't need a crossover cable, they detect and adjust by themself.
 
When you use a crossover cable between to computers, you usually need to manually assign the IP addresses to the same range on both systems. If they were older systems they would probably be using Netbeui, which wouldn't need an IP to see the other computer.
 
Thanks for all the help. I got it up and running. Wish I knew about the gigabit ethernet thing before. Now I know.
