I'm not sure if this is possible, but has anyone been able to force the Canon SD400 to use a laptop's hard drive, for example, as its primary storage - instead of the SD card?

Does canon supply remote capture software for it?

My G3 and EOS350D both came with the "remote capture" program which downloads pics directly to a PC which is connected via USB - only prob is that the on camera controls are disabled in this mode (it also leaks memory like a sieve, but that's not usually much of a problem).

Unfortunately, expanded storage is regarded as a high-end feature. So, only professional cameras offer features like hooking up firewire drives, or the ability to save to network shares via WiFi.

There are specially made devices that are like mobile drives with flash reader slots. So you can dump your flash cards onto it and erase the cards for more use in one swell foop... Usually you add your own notebook drive to make it work. http://www.steves-digicams.com has reviews of some of them under Accessories > "Image Storage Devices". The Vosonic X's Drives are pretty cool.
. Some of them add an MP3 or MP3 and video clip player/pic previewer to the mix. Some are found under card readers and others are found under MP3 players on Newegg.
