How is that calculated? I never log out.... do you do accesses in the past 5 minutes, or really everyone logged in?
 
Like anything else web based its tracked using cookies, as there is no state over the web cookies are used to know when the user last visited the forums. We track when a user was last here and thats how we know. The time period used is 15 minutes. It's at least 95% accurate.
