As mentioned in the title.
Is 1 = first class, or 1 = grade 1 (poor)?

I see someone has actually taken the time to rate me - as a No.9, I'm not sure whether to be be pleased or pissed off....lol :)

I gave you a ten because you said thank you!

(my rating's turned off, so don't bother trying to return the favour ;))

Well I may live in China - but I'm Western (white) so thanks for that last vote pg19...so now I'm at 8, however, "8" is a very lucky number in the Chinese culture :)
"Do you feel lucky punk?"...lol

I'm an engineer, I've been living here since 1995.
I guess the real reason is that I like to travel and see first hand new cultures etc.
But, I've just finished my last contract so currently in the process of getting a new job (hopefully) lol :)

Well to be pedantic...(sorry)....there is no Chinese language - they have a common language known as Mandarin or Putonghua.
Where I live they speak Cantonese and my language ability is pretty limited to be fair, many complement me as "knowing a lot of Chinese" but it's just the basics for day to day stuff.
I can't really have a conversation but I can get by generally on a day to day basis with my limited knowledge. I do have a basic understanding of some characters - however very often I know the meaning but have no idea how to say them..lol
It's a bit like a "no smoking" sign, you know the meaning in any language but you wouldn't necessarily know how to say it in say Russian..
I've never studied any chinese languages but I would if I was given the opportunity, however the sad truth is that it is easy to be lazy and just use English as the people who want to practice English far outweigh the number that will listen to my incorrect Cantonese.;-)
The other problem is that often when I speak Cantonese they automatically assume i'm fluent then have no idea whats going on. :)

I'd rate it about -1 :)

I sometimes do that. There's a few people, who shall remain nameless, whom I've accidentally given a 1 instead of a 10. Forgive me ;)

Andy,
I'm not sure whether it is better to be a "gow" (9) or "sahp" (10) or a "sahp gow" (19) lol :)
I'm sure you will understand my gweilo lingo... :) and humour intended..

10 is good, and 1 is bad. But the whole rating system is stupid anyway IMHO.

I personally think ratings are pretty useless. I dont think there's any credibility in the system if people are giving out a 10 rating just because someone says thank you.

and once you give a rating out, you can't take it back. You can give a guy a 10 for saying thank you one day, and wish you hadn't when you find out he's the next troll. Anyway, thats just my opinion
