Well, if you've ever read that one thread in the Forum Issues, you'd know a crapload of user names have been banned from Anandtech.
Most of them are fairly short and simple.

I wouldnt doubt that a lot of folks come on here and try something simple and get turned down, then keep trying more and more stuff until they get pissed off and come up with an annoyingly long and difficult name just to get signed up.

We now have the technology that allows longer user names. When a lot of the fogeys around here signed up, there was an imposed limit.
