user meta-moderation?

slashdot has a system where there is a statistical chance a given random member will be able to moderate threads (well, really only rate posts). I think it would be interesting to implement a similar system, which would allow "votes" to lock/move threads, and threads with a high number of votes would get reviewed faster by mods. specifically, i was thinking that this would be best in the Highly Technical forum, where there is a relatively high percentage of OT posts.

Would that be possible?
 
I imagine it would be "possible", but not likely to happen. You would have to weigh the value of pointing out particular threads to the load put on the servers, the time/money to implement, etc. As it is, the moderators are extremely responsive and do a great job of cleaning things up that they know about.
 
I usually find that a friendly PM to the moderator gets posts reviewed a little faster, especially in low traffic forums like software
 
With the way people use the current user rating system (giving out random 1's etc), I can imagine that a system like that might easily be abused (more so if it was done in OT over HT, but you get the idea).

Other than that, it's just not something that I can see being necessary.
 
My main problem with such an idea is that I feel the odds are all too high that such a privelege would be abused.
As Azraele stated, one only needs look towards the disaster of a member rating system in which everyone goes around randomly giving out 1's.
