Useless Materialism

Scouzer

Lifer
I've been saving like crazy for the last few years; I thought maybe its time to splurge and get myself some kind of impulse buy.

I spent all evening last night shopping for some cool crap and came up with nothing. I thought about an iPad 2 but by all accounts this generation is a bit meh so I might as well wait for 3. I thought about an SSD but the latest Sandforce apparently has issues.

There's literally nothing I want with my money that I don't already have. This isn't a gloat thread, I'm hardly rich with a 65-70k income. I don't have much fancy stuff, just a modest townhouse and an '07 Civic.

Which leads me to my overall point: I don't really care to be rich. I already have the useless material stuff I want.

Am I alone? In my generation (I'm 24) it seems material shit is everyone's purpose in life. All they want is to make more money to buy more shit. Who cares?

You're definitely not doing your part to stimulate the economy. Get out there and spend spend spend!!!

Elective surgery. Make yourself bigger, faster, stronger and with enhanced senses. Or get some tits.

edit:
On the reals take a vacation to someplace exotic.

Travelling is what I do. I took a 3 week vacation to the UK & Ireland this year which wasn't cheap. But even travelling is getting old to me after doing so much of it.

A weekend car sounds nice Oil...wish I had a garage.

Being materialistic is what humans do. Our evolution was in part affected by the fact that we are a material based culture. Embrace it, now go buy some shit.

Now that you have all the gadgets you want, it's time to save for retirement and nice annual vacations.

I'm the same, except I want the numbers in my bank account to be big just so I can stick it to all the other people who bitch and moan about how they can't afford anything. You know, the ones who take out 5 lines of credit and max out their credit cards, then bitch about "omfg, I gotta pay my bills!".

Well, at least you know how to enjoy yourself. I guess in this case you should buy something really rare or valuable and destroy it on film thereby causing nerds 'round the world to weep.

Yeah, or you could buy me a new spray booth. That would be cool 😉

I would continue to travel now and not wait until you're old and retired. Have fun while you are young.

I don't have a personal garage either but do have a garage for the whole apartment complex...good enough I guess

you're not alone, i'm the same way 😀 in that I haven't bought myself something nice in a while so I went out to look and came up with nothing. could be that the mall just doesn't have anything interesting though..

Haha. I put bank receipts on the back seat of my car where others can easily see them. Being a dick gives me more enjoyment than having expensive furniture. Most of my stuff is cheap or used.

There's lot of things I want, but I usually have to ask myself if I really need it, and I have to prioritize because I can't buy it all at once. Right now my priority is a new vehicle and getting my weeping tiles/basement outside seal redone. A used car will probably set me back 5k and the weeping tiles will set me back 13k if I don't go the DIY route. Will take a few years to save that up, so I know I can't buy any other toys, or at least limit myself.

My latest toy is a sawzall, but my excuse is that it makes it faster to cut the trees so the excavator can get through to do the weeping tiles. 😛 And it has lot of other uses.

I find myself buying more DIY related stuff than electronics. The last time I built a computer was when I was in college.

It's like being a celebrity. They can go around dressed like shit with no make-up, but they know they can do better any time they feel like.

Studies have shown spending money on expiriences (trips, fine dining, amusement parks, etc) makes you happier in the long run than spending it on posessions.

You may not find anything that catches your fancy now, but eventually you will.

Or you could just make a goal of retiring by the age of 50. By that time, you'll be pretty sick of working anyways, or at very least, wanting to do something different that might not pay as well.

I know how you feel. My only major expense is my car and that something I enjoy. Besides that, I enjoy using what I have and trying to see how much I can save.

That would require leaving their parent's basement though and I don't think anyone here is ready to do that yet. Maybe in 20-30 years...maybe.
