I've driven the G35 before. While not my top pick in this category, it is a great car for $16k. Lots of power, but I didn't care for the interior.

Others I would consider:

04+ TL - FWD, Great V6, good gas mileage, adequate interior with several tech goodies

IS300 (any year) - RWD, Great I6, poor gas mileage for size/power (but not a deal breaker), nice interior (few tech goodies)

04+ TSX - FWD, i4, Great gas mileage but underpowered in this class, nice interior with several tech goodies

How would the G35's interior rank with those other cars you listed?

I liked the interior of all 3 of these better than the G35. It would definitely be personal preference though. My biggest gripe with the G is the quality of the interior at new car prices. At $16k, its a great overall car.

The G35 will have a much more modern interior than the IS, and alot more gadgets. Overall I thought the IS300's interior is a bit higher quality (I'm biased though since I owned an IS300 for a couple of years).

The G35 will have a larger interior than an 04-08 TSX, and the quality of parts are about equal. I liked the layout of the TSX a bit better.

I find the seats slightly more comfortable in the G35 compared to the TL. I found the quality of the interior to be higher in the Acura though, and the layout more to my liking. The TL interior is noticably larger than the G35.

didn't relise the IS300s would be resonable in price, figured toyota and the general stupid resale value.

I live in michigan, alot more domestic brand loyalty means not many japanese and german cars so there higher price used do to scarcity then the rest of the country, which is why the cts was on my list there are a ton available with 50k miles or less with that 3.6 vvt DI motor

I'm not sure how much difference in prices there are between locations. All 3 of the cars I listed are available in Houston within your budget.

Fly out to a city with plenty of inventory and buy your car. It would be an awesome roadtrip back home 😉

^^ yes 300 at the crank no issue. but the VQ35DE egine with 300 rwhp that will not happen on just a tune even with simple N/A mods. You will need to build out the Motor. And thus its not cost effective. The VQ35HR in 07+ that's a different story, they put down 280 rwhp stock

btw the 260 and 280 hp motors are 100% the same. The 298 is the revup

Listed hp
2003-2004 MT or AT (260/280) hp motor
2005-2006 AT (280hp)
2005-2006 MT (298hp Rev up motor)

Yes, I agree 100% 🙂 That's why I never said 300rwhp, that's a whole other ballgame. I'm just saying the obvious, that the lesser 260/280hp VQ35DE G35s can be taken to equal or better than the 298hp stock VQ35DE versions with intake/tune. I guess reading my post it might have seemed like I was talking WHP instead of comparing stock rated HP.

EDIT : Yeah the Rev-up motor is a slightly different variant of the VQ35DE, different cams and higher redline, it takes a hit in low end torque but gives a higher peak HP at the top. Flashing a non Rev-up VQ35DE to a higher redline gives about the same results, but the hit down low and the gains up high aren't quite as pronounced.

Well that car had an intake, full exhaust and phenolic spacers... it's not "just a tune". For an N/A motor I'd be surprised if a chip got more than 10hp.

Currently here is how I would rank the cars I'm familiar with. I won't mention the Jaguar since they aren't my cup of tea, and I'm unfamiliar with them.

1. Acura TL - Alot of car for the money. Big, fast, great mpg, and tons of tech goodies. Possibly the least comfortable seats of the group, but the quietest interior of the group. Downsides are FWD and how common it is.

2. Infiniti G35 - A lot of fun for the money. Fast and RWD. I find the interior quality lacking, and much prefer the recent body refresh on the 07+ models. This is also becoming a very common car on the road.

2 (tie). Lexus IS300 - Probably a bit overpriced in comparison to the others, but I really like the body style (admittedly biased). Small interior, but high quality and comfortable. Fun car to drive, and not very common.

3. Cadillac CTS - I've never driven one, and simply place rank based on size and appearance to me.

4. Acura TSX - The TSX is really outclassed by everything on this list. You could however get a similar year/mileage for alot less money, or get a newer model then anything else on this list. Its the budget model in the thread, but still a great car for the money.

For the VQ35DE with 280 or 298hp stock, more than 10hp would indeed be surprising. For a 260hp starting point, there's a decent gain to be had. From 280hp, getting to ~300hp crank is not hard.

I have a 04 CTS with the 3.6L.

Been very reliable and the suspension parts from the CTS-V fit it. That and there are plenty of aftermarket parts for the CTS-V that fit the non V cars. I got a used set of CTS-V sway bars for my car after a V owner upgraded.

You can get a good CTS cheap as not many people think of it, esp younger people.
