Used oil disposal

I have some used motor oil from my lawn mower. It's only a quart.

I want to properly dispose of it, but the only disposal facility I can find is our county facility, out in the sticks. Do local gas stations or oil change places normally allow you to give them small quantities of oil, or am I stuck making a road trip? If so, I guess I'd wait until the end of the season and change the oil again, then take both quarts out to the dump . . .

Alot of auto parts stores take used oil as well. May depend on the state I guess, but I've dropped some off at Advance Auto & Pep Boys.

I have a car mechanic friend, I ususally leave such stuff at his shop.

Take your used oil in for recycling.

iirc, the law is whoever that sell motor oil will have to take back used oil.

I've been hording the stuff - I think I have about 10 or 12 gallons of various motor oil, transmission fluid, gear oil, etc. Gotta get rid of it soon.

Man, I have like 10 gallons in my garage, I haven't disposed of it in a couple of years.

Do auto part stores limit hwo much you can take back? I may have to hit several.

Yep, my dad always changes the oil on a part of the driveway that tends to erode.

The parts stores take transmission fluid as well as oil here - it's more or less the same stuff.

the oil filters just go in the normal trash, after draining them
i have no transmission fluids outside my cars, but that site i linked can tell you where in your country you can take any hazardous materials

Quite illegal too, at least around here. They don't use real oil on gravel roads anymore for dust control.

Actually, you're supposed to take the oil filters in as well. There tends to be a lot of oil trapped in the filter material that won't actually drain. Some places take them, others won't. Call first.

That stuff is carcinogenic, so don't store it for too long. Breathing its fumes won't prolong your life.

When I say my garage, I mean my barn, and it's not where I park my car... so I'm not out there all the time. It's in capped bottles, but yeah I've been meaning to get rid of it.
