Used Civic and Integras are EXPENSIVE

I guess with spikes in gas prices supply is rather low for a used reliable good gas mileage car. I was looking for a used Integra or Civic hatch as a daily driver and everything is so overpriced.

1996 manual Integra with like $150k miles still goes for $6000!

I've noticed this too... it almost seems the best way to go for fuel economy cars is to (gasp) ... buy new recently?

I bought a 97 Sentra in 02 for $5600... had 51K on it, has cost me only about $1200 in non-general maintenence in the 50K I've put on since I've had it. It gets about 33MPG, and would probably be better if I used the cruise control more.

used integra would be a bad buy though... i just don't see the value of something probably beat to death by a racer boy. its reliable, but how much abuse do u think it can take?

Those things will last forever... my last car was a Sentra and I got it up to 141K and it still ran great. I just got a better car in place of it.

that's also true. 90% of the ones I looked at have some type of aftermarket part on them. 🙁

I like to think I've found a little diamond in the rough........(if you don't need frills).......in the '93-'97 Corolla/Prizm.

I bought a '95 Prizm for $1,800 back in September when gas went to $3/gal.

It's a slow beast and only has a 3spd auto, but it's a Toyota motor, trans, etc. w/ just some minor cosmetic changes. I tinted the windows, installed a new stereo, replaced one tire, went thru all the fluids and she's good to go.

All told I probably have about $2,500 into it.....out the door.

It doesn't get 30mpg unless I'm on the freeway,(rarely on the freeway at all) but around town I get 23-24 and that's about double what my full-sized F150 was gettin'. It's payin' for itself at about $80/month, every month. 😀

If you have to have the *corolla*, you can get a little better mileage w/ the 4spd auto, but expect to pay a few ponies more for that.

My .02

I had a '97 corolla automatic. The 3 gears kills any potential mpg value. I never got more than 25 mpg. My current car gets 24 mpg (on premium though) so that would defeat the purpose of purchasing a high mpg daily driver. Compared to an F150 however good deal!

I am thinking of buying a used SUV, might be able to get a deal on one because of high gas prices.

I'm not sure where you are shopping but you can easily get a '96 GSR for $5000. If you are willing to settle for one of the weak variants (GS, LS, RS), there's likely thousands of 2ndGen (94-01) Integras out there for less than 5Lg.

Try a '99 or later Saturn SC1 coupe... they get 35 highway, aren't as "popular" as the Civic and Integra, so you can find them in the $5,000-$6,000 range with decent mileage.

There is a Red '99 SC1 Coupe in Corpus Christi with 54,450 miles for $5,991 at AutoNation.com

Yeah I have the next gen integra -- the RSX, and it's only lost about 1k in value over the past 2 years.

Yeah the value they hold is a bit ridiculous at times. They're great, reliable cars, but Honda and Toyota don't have that market cornered. Then again, I drive a '97 Accord with 100k miles on it. 😉 I was thinking about selling it now while it's still worth something. But then I realized I could drive it for another 3 years and it'll still be worth roughly the same price.

A Nissan Sentra would be one of your bests bet in terms of price/mpg/reliability. Nissans tend to depreciate a good bit faster than Hondas and Toyotas, but in my experience they've been just as reliable. I sold mine with 181k miles on it and it was still going strong requiring only routine maintenance up to that point.

There is a reason Saturns aren't as popular as Civics or Integras, besides being kinda homely the 1.9 ltr motors in them are noisy, tend to burn LOTS of oil as they age and have a tendancy to have the head warp and crack.

I have a 91 Infiniti G20 for my daily driver has 151k on it other than needing the original clutch replaced and 3 of the window regulators replaced its a great car. Might want to look in to those 🙂.

im sorry to say, but if you can't afford it, you shouldn't be driving.
I can afford it, I just don't want to drive it to work everyday for both mpg and wear and tear.

the manual has 4 gears and the EPA rated mpg is only +1. Following that it would get 26mpg instead of 25.

I'm shopping in the bay area and just checking on auto trader. There are plenty of automatics but hardly any manuals.
