Use USA Notebook on 220V in China?

Q1: Simple question I'm sure for anyone who travels overseas with a laptop. Can I plug my Lenovo laptop (bought last month though NewEgg in USA) into 220 volt outlets? Is the proper plug adapter the only "extra" item needed? Will they have USA-to-Beijing plug adapters available there? Google info states there is no "standard" plug style in China.
Q2: Is a surge protector needed for laptops? Seems the AC adapter is a transformer that will protect the laptop from surge/spike damage, but does the adapter itself need protection?
Thanks for your help!

i think all power supplys are power switching, you just need to get the right walljack for your adapter. try radioshack, or other local electronic stores.

Apparently power strips that have US-style plugs are very popular there.

Most laptop power supplies are "world compatible" (notice on the adapter it might say "110 - 230 V input" or something to that effect) and will work fine. Virtually all new ones are.

Surge protectors are almost always a good idea, particularly if you're going to an area where power is unstable.

Thanks, this is great to know. I assume they sell surge protectors in Beijing, too. Less weight to carry over from here.

Definately do not plug a 120V surge protector in a 240V socket. I've done it before, ended up blowing the breakers out in half the dorm.
