It's been brought up time and time again. I don't see it happening.

That and embedded images in signatures just drive down readability, suck up bandwidth, and just make a generally sloppy-looking message board.

I agree! And it will become a major pain in the neck to monitor if those avatars are within the forums guidelines..

Customized avatars are horrible. The whole "No images and no custom avatars" thing is one amazing positive for the forums.

i disagree with all of you :) i enjoy some of the custom avatars from other forums, i agree some do go overboard but for the most part i think they are well done. most forums limit the size you can use so that i believe stops the bad ones from appearing. i am not asking for the extravagant ones with animation which i dislike. for example in other forums where you are allowed to use customized ones i upload a picture of a case sticker for my CPU. something plain and simple that i believe doesn't offend anybody.

Some of the custom avatars that I've seen on other sites are just childish crap.

I say no to custom avatars. Leave well enough alone.

I also say no, all you need is one immature member trying to use an animated gif. We have a hard enough time trying to decide if certain threads should be locked.

I think we should have the ability to upload our own avatars.

So if an avatar image breaks the rules, they can remove it from the user. I don't see that's a big problem at all.

That's because YOU don't have to moderate it.

Custom avatars is a good thing, IMO. It's nice to have some more personality in them, the ones that are available are simple and don't really communicate anything.

When I moderated for a different forum, taking care of bad users and their immature avatars wasn't a huge issue, because we didn't even allow any type but JPEG.

How many people were on that forum? Our moderators seem overwhelmed as it is. If you can't communicate well enough with words and need an avatar to do it for you, maybe it's time to rethink participating on a written forum.

Then maybe its time for more mods

I've seen forums that worked that way, generally it failed epically.
