Not really. A GTX 970 matches a 1060 3GB and when overclocked isn't that far off from the GTX 1060 6GB.
But that's on old drivers and games right? I mean for example I've heard people say (not sure how correct it is) that GTX 780 performs worse than 1050ti in games today so old architecture from Nvidia keeps slowing down in newer games so I wouldn't at all be surprised if 1060 were to outperform 980 in newer games

It is true that Kepler(700 series) hasn't aged well, especially with respect to DX12 and Vulkan - for example Kepler performs pretty poorly in idTech 6 games like Doom and Wolfenstein II. But Maxwell(900 series) is still quite capable as long as VRAM isn't a limitation.

I think it's better to compare stock vs. stock because you can overclock the 1060 as well. If you want, you can compare the OC potential of cards as well since that can vary depending on architecture or just the limitations of a card if it only has a 6-pin.

Well if we are to restrict ourselves to stock configurations then as I said before the 1060 3GB is matched by a 970. However, Maxwell was very good at overclocking and some AIB card models of the 970 would probably be ~10-15% faster than stock performance taking it closer to the 6GB variant of the 1060.

On AMD's side Polaris brought a slight price reduction in this segment before the crypto boom, but it wasn't a convincing enough upgrade for all the R9 290/290x/390/390x users.

Which is why I am saying that the 200-300$ segment hasn't seen a significant uplift in performance since the GTX 970 dropped in price to under 300$ - which was what, 3 years ago?

If we are lucky and this upcoming card is priced between 200-300$, then finally we'll see a decent jump in this segment if the rumored performance is around that of the GTX 1070.

Gtx970 at 1439 core.

Can we stay on topic now?

If your 970's gpu boost clock is listed at 1439 MHz in GPU-Z then it's likely running at aroundr 1500 MHz in actual gameplay. My 1431 MHz boost came from setting the boost to 1367 MHz (and having that reported in GPU-Z), and it was unstable as hell. It would pass Firestrike easily but an hour of GTA V would crash it.

Less than 6GB if VRAM for a ~1070Ti equivalent GPU would be a really dumb idea according to me...

Edit : Not even speaking about GDDR5 vs GDDR6 versions... There already was a real gap between a GTX 1060 3GB vs GTX 1060 6GB, but a RTX 2060 3GB GDDR5 vs a RTX 2060 6GB GDDR6...

One important thing to keep in mind is that hardware vendors often submit products that are still under consideration. Many of these cards might not make it past the drawing board. Unless Nvidia officially announces the GeForce RTX 2060 with the aforementioned memory configurations, Gigabyte's lengthy listing should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Because why would it be below $200? Logical conclusion. Nvidia has moved price tiers up so no x60 cards in $200 range anymore.

If the rumors from Adored’s video are close to true (I think they’re too optimistic personally) then NVidia may not have a choice. They can get away with the pricing on the RTX 2080 Ti because AMD has no competition. There’s a limit to brand loyalty and if AMD offers similar performance for less money, NVidia will keep their prices competitive.

It's most likely marketing nonsense, it's likely to be at 1070's performance at best, with less VRAM, and for 350$? for a mid-range card? No thank you, i'll pass.

Spec wise it should at least pass GTX 1070. It has the same amount of cores with a lot more memory bandwidth. RTX 2070 has less cores than GTX 1080 as a comparison.

https://videocardz.com/79505/nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-pricing-and-performance-leaked

"NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 to cost 349 USD"
quote,
"The RTX 2060 is a mid-range model replacing GTX 1060 from Pascal architecture. Throughout Reviewers Guide, NVIDIA claims it will offer comparable performance to GeForce GTX 1070 Ti."

According to the same guide, RTX 2060 is said to provide playable experience in Battlefield V with ray tracing enabled (1080p):

Battlefield V: RT Off: 90 FPS
Battlefield V: RT On + DLSS Off: 65 FPS
Battlefield V: RT On + DLSS On: 88 FPS
The GeForce RTX 2060 will be introduced on January 7th at the price of 349 USD (same price for custom and Founders Edition cards). The card will be bundled with Battlefield V or Anthem for free.

in the link they give gaming benchmarks vs the 1070ti
