Anyways, the answer to your question is yes. All the external CD-RW drives I've seen use too much juice to simply get their power from the USB cable. Think of what that would do to laptop batteries!
I agree, but those darn USB Zip drives can get power from the USB port. Of course they draw the maximum current 500 mA, so you can't connect them to a hub that doesn't have it's own power supply.
