USB vs Overclocked PS/2 Mice

I've been using a overclocked PS/2 mouse for years now, and I just recently got a USB mouse...
USB is definately smoother than a regular mouse, but a 200Hz PS/2 seem to beat my new USB mouse!!! Do USB mice overclock also?

USB refreshes at 125, some will vary slightly. Overclocking USB...hmm interesting but won't that eat up more cpu cycles. Setting 200PS2 takes up less resources than usb 125 in my experience.

Yes your USB mouse is CPU based (like a WinModem) so if you ask it to refresh more often then you are going to eat more PCU cycles with your mouse.

Not exactly on the topic, but I've been using USB mice for the last year or so now because doing so leaves IRQ12 free to be used elsewhere... plus the USB sampling rate is satisfactory to me and I'd rather not have to run yet another tweakie program at boot time. Not a criticism of anyone else's practices... this is just how I like things to be.

Edit: Oh yeah, I'm using an MS standard intellimouse w/eye. You really ought to try an intellieye mouse, if you're not doing so already... only thing that pisses me off is that they don't make Intellimouse Explorers for lefties! :|

Microsoft does make a symmetrical Intellimouse now too. Its called the Intellimouse Optical. Good for us lefties!

No, PS/2 is not CPU dependant like USB is.

Personally, I like the way this new symmetrical design looks much more than the tradition Microsoft Explorer style mouse case. Looks more comfy to me.

Does anyone else who uses the MS Explorer have trouble with ALWAYS hitting the right click button inadvertantly? The right button seems to go down to far on the side of the mouse.Other than that I love it.

With a little program called PS/2 Rate PLUS! You can adjust your PS/2 rate anywhere from 10Hz to 200Hz! You notice a difference, its great.

THis is slightly off-topic for this thread but I used to have my PS/2 rate in MouseWare set at 200hz. But then my mouse was so so slow one day! I had the mouse speed maxed and the acceleration on high (which seems to be the fastest mouse speed settings). I had to turn the PS/2 rate down to 100hz (as that is the next highest thing below 200hz) with the speed all the way up still. I wish I could have 200hz again but when you up the rate the mouse gets way slower. Any solutions?

The refresh rate of the mouse is actually the sampling rate; the amount of times a mouse checks the position and difference of position of the mouse' ball. This means that even though your monitor refreshes 75Hz (75 times a second), it will still display 75 Hz of the mouse, and even so, I don't think the pixels are small enough for a 200Hz mouse sampling rate (for the cursor) to roll over.
