USB trouble :(

I have a usb optical intellimouse explorer and a usb dsl modem. For some reason, my USB ports seem to reandomly stop responding every now and then. My mouse will go completely dead, no light or anything, and my dsl gets disconnected as a result of this. It started happening a month or two ago and is getting worse and worse. To (temporarily) fix the problem, I shut down my computer, unplug the mouse and modem, and proceed to use some compressed air to clean out the ports. I originally thought it might be dust build up between the contacts but i ruled that out since there is no pattern. Sometimes I can go a few days without a problem, and other times my usb goes out 5 times in a single day 🙁 When this happens, my computer does not freeze. I can keyboard my way out of windows and such. It really is an annoyance. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

There is a common problem with shorts in the early M$ Explorer cords. Call M$ for a free trouble free replacement by phone.
