USB to USB file sharing?

i have two computer (1desktop, 1laptop) that have separate ips and are not on the same subnet. I would like to share files between both computers. Both are running windows xp. I would do firewire networking, however neither the desktop nor the laptop have firewire builtin. I was looking at USB to USB file sharing as an option. But I'm not sure what to brand/model to purchase. Or should I use a router and have both computer connect to the router. Any suggestions
