I'm looking for an adapter so I can use my PS/2 keyboard on my laptop. I found this on ebay:

Adapter

So what I'm questioning is if this will actually work. The reason I question it is because keyboards and Mice have different pinouts so I don't know how you can use 1 adapter for both. And it really makes me wonder is because a friend of mine gave me one that looks similiar but it has a pic of a mouse on it, and it won't work with my keyboard.

That will not work with a standard PS/2 Keyboard you will need a smart converter that is just a pin converter (For a Keyboard that already has the USB Circuit in it) goto http://www.monoprce.com/ and type in 173 thats a Smart USB to PS/2 Adapter for keyboard and mouse. I have one for my laptop computer and it works with just a keyboard attached

You can just use this:

Much "cleaner" solution since you don't have a PS/2 mouse to convert as well. Keep in mind, if your keyboard has special shortcut keys (button that launches email client, media controls, etc.) they will not work when the keyboard is plugged into these adapters.

I gave you a number of links above... You'll need an adapter like the ones in the links I gave you. Those have active circuitry in them that converts the PS/2 signals into equivalent USB signals.

I know, I looked at yours but for that price I might as well buy a new keyboard. As I said I wanted something cheap, and the link I am showing is cheap, and I was asking if it had the circuitry in it that you were talking about.

I don't know if the one you linked to has the circuitry. I do know the one I linked to does. I guess you can try the one from Newegg and if it doesn't work, return it. By then you could have saved money by buying the one I suggested that works. Or you could just get a new keyboard. I'll sell you one of my Dell RT7D50 USB keyboards for $10.00 shipped. That costs less than the adapter you linked to + shipping.

Edit:
I see at least four USB keyboards on Newegg that cost less or the same as the adapter you linked to.

The item on eBay is called an "infinite profit item" IOW it cost them nothing (came with a unit that has both PS/2 and USB electronics internally) wasn't used so whatever they get for it is infinite profit (anything divided by 0 = infinity). To convert PS/2 to USB requires active circuitry. The PPA one linked above is common. If your kbd or mouse is capable of universal operation, it would have come with its own adapter. Otherwise, it is just USB or PS/2 and requires electronics to work.
