USB to Infrared Adapter - Free After Rebate

ive been looking for a cheap irda option for a while, dunno if i want to have $30 tied up in it though, think i can find another one somewhere for like 10 or should i just go with this,

how fast is Infared go up to? might be wiser to invest in a usb network hub or firewire. firewires are neat! connect 2 computers with a firewire cable and u have instant network access, no middle hardware required. most old laptops however dont have firewire and only irda.

Perhaps....but you might consider this....
Gigafast 14Mbps HomePlug Ethernet Bridge $18 AR Shipped Free (Newegg)

or this.....
Switches! 5 Port $3.99 / 8 Port $5.99 AR @ Newegg

Far as IR goes, you can get about 4 mbps (4 mega-bits per second) between two laptops with built-in IRda.....but this is a USB device....might have some limitations, but heck, if you're going to use a very limited DLS (Direct Line of Sight) network device, you probably won't mind the slowness.

Well, this would be good for linking desktops and say, cell phones, since most desktops don't have infrared.

EDIT: The rebate is probably not that iffy: it goes to Continental Promotions Groups (i.e. the www.rebatestatus.com people), who also do Amazon, among others. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT FORM, FOR $20 and *NOT* the $10 form that goes to White Bear Lake, MN -- there are two active rebates now, only one of them is good to make the product FAR. If you got the wrong form, Fry's might be able to fax you the right one, as did for me (they offered).

Someone on FW pointed out the manufacturer of this IrDA product is a fair-sized cable maker, so both the manufacturer and rebate processor seem OK, which would suggest the rebate is too--in other words, this isn't like the rebate for another item I got yesterday at Fry's where the rebate form has a PO Box in Playa del Rey, CA that doesn't correspond to any rebate processor I can find and there's no phone #, email or website and the manufacturer doesn't seem to be a large outfit either

I think these are the sorts of Fry's rebates that, when they don't work out, give Fry's rebates a bad name. Not that all such rebates don't work out--I've done some successfully, albeit with a bit more followup needed at times--but the likelihood of problems would seem to be higher when you have a rebate that is not being handled by a real rebate processor and/or where the company that's sponsoring the rebate is a small-time outfit.

As I said on my FW post about this, Caveat Rebator 🙂

can i use this with one of those remote control program like IRassistant? or girder?

Will my onboard motherboard ( IrDA, CIR, FIR, Actisys, Tekram IRMate ) / External IrDA receiver work with Girder ?

Generally speaking these onboard IR modules are IrDA devices. IrDA Devices are not suitable for remote control purposes. They use a different frequency of light and where never designed to decode remote control signals. There is a slim chance that your IrDA device will work with Girder 3.0, if so then this Unsupported IrDA driver for Girder 3.0 plugin might be it. For Girder 3.2 or higher we have no plugin. If you feel that you can improve this driver feel free to contact me otherwise do not ask questions about it in the forum nor send an email to Ron. If you ask about how to get IrDA to work anyway expect a VERY short reaction as questions about IrDA are getting on my nerves.

* * * WRONG REBATE FORM ALERT * * *

In case anyone is looking to go to Fry's to get this unit, make sure you get the *$20* form that goes to *NIAGARA FALLS, NY* and NOT the $10 form going to White Bear Lake, MN. There are two active rebates now but only one will make the unit FAR.

If you already bought the item and have the wrong form, perhaps Fry's will do for you as they did for me, namely fax it to you--the form explicitly states that copies of the form are OK.

(FYI, the P.O. Box 134, Niagara Falls, NY rebates are handled by Continental Promotions Group who run www.rebatestatus.com -- they do rebates for Amazon, among others.)

(The reason that this info appears down here and up above is that my previous post above was based on the incorrect form info--I've edited it but wanted to make sure anyone who might've read it before, and who might skip the edited version, would see this here).

its worth buying just for the USB cable extention, and the other cable that retains shape when you bend it🙂 thats pretty much why i bought it, having infrared adaptor around when if you ever need it can't be bad.

2 USB extension cables that retain their shape when bent (one short, one longer), one stand, and one SigmaTel USB-iRDA adapter. Good deal. 🙂

I have a Nokia 3360 cell phone and wanting to change the ring tone. Can this send the tone and how would I do it?

your phone should have a transfer mode. activate it and put it next to the infrared. thats what i did with my 3650 before i got my blue tooth adaptor🙂 bluetooth just 0wnz ir🙂

but yea, usb cables are costly if you buy em separately ever.

Nice product extremly fair overnight delivery! Comes with 3 ft extension and 8" moldable extension. Sync'd up my new IR Ready NOKIA phone with NOKIA's free software.

I recommend downloading the updated WinXP drivers and installing them first. Updated Drives from SigmaTel

Great Deal!

Hey
