So I just found out my dell lacks a firewire outlet. Is there such thing as a USB-to-FIREWIRE?!

I want to connect my camcorder into the computer with firewire so I can edit video on software other than the included crap.

My camcorder is a Sony BTW!

THANKS!

I don't care about speed, but I heard WMM and other programs will only function on a firewire cable, not the crappy USB...am i right?!!!!

No, this is not a laptop.

It's an inspiron 530.

~5 months old.

I need a four pin outlet BTW!

Is the problem that you can't figure out how to open it, or you don't want to open it?

As for the cables and outlets, you can get a 6-pin-to-4-pin cable, no problem there. Get a regular old Firewire card and cram it in there.

My mom won't let me open the computer. : (

I don't mind slow, I only want to the firewire so I can use WMM and other non-sony crap editing software that you can't use with USB.

Well that's a bummer. Can you get your dad to install it? :D

Anyhow, here's WMM's info on connection types that'll work. Some USB connections will work, see if yours is the kind they describe here:

You can use a digital video (DV) camera to import video from a videotape (or from a live source) to your computer when using Import Video.

To import high-quality video using Import Video, you can connect your DV camera to your computer in one of two ways. The first method is to use an IEEE 1394 connection. In this case, one end of the IEEE 1394 cable is connected to the DV port on your camera and the other end of the cable is plugged into an IEEE 1394 port on your computer. This connection method is more popular than the second connection type, which uses USB 2.0.

If you have a DV camera that supports streaming over USB (also called a USB Video Class [UVC] camera), you can connect the video camera to your computer by using a USB 2.0 connection. To determine whether your DV camera supports USB streaming over DV, check Windows Device Manager and determine if the camera appears as a "USB Video Device," or check the documentation that came with your DV camera or go to the manufacturer's Web site.

I checked and I'm pretty sure it's a negative. In my experience all Sony camcorders have proven incompatible with WMM via included crappy USB.

Now, is there a USB-FIREWIRE adapter that exists that will provide the same ability as a regular firewire cord? I'll sacrifice speed, I just want it to work!

OK - let's cut to the chase:

FW-USB

But, it is a whole lot cheaper to have your dad or a qualified person put in a Firewire PCI card.

lol open it when your mum ain't around . It only takes seconds to open up the case, plug in the PCI card, and close the case. No trace. :)
