i have several 2.5" sata hd laying around.

this cable is cheaper than an enclosure, and more convienent for popping different hd in and out.

do i still need power or will this device power the hd?

or is item only good for usb to 2.5" ide w/o external power?

You may have to run a Molex power or SATA power cable outside the case - all 3.5-in drives , PATA and SATA (Both are IDE!) require separate power. 2.5-in drives may or may not require a "Y" cable to use 2 USB ports.

If you want the convenience of swapping several 2.5" drives without messing with separate SATA and power cables, consider a HDD dock or even something like the Apricorn SATA Wire device.
