USB stopped working

After years of no problems, my USB suddenly stopped recognizing anything plugged in (no beeps, no icons, nothing). No action on USB keys, camera, PDA hotsync, printer, etc.

The root hub and host controller appear fine in Device manager. Tried uninstalling them and letting windows (XP Pro) find and reinstall. Turned off the root hub power management option. Installed windows updates. Installed a couple hotfixes suggested in Microsoft's Knowledge Base. Still no joy. Tried rolling back to several different previous configurations, but no luck.

There is power on the USB jack, and I assume Device Manager would show if the hardware was not responding

I would hate to try a fresh install at this point, but I have run out of ideas.

Anyone have any clues or leads?

Is this happening with the USB ports built onto the ATX jack plate, or on some auxiliary ports? It it's on an auxiliary port, check inside your case to see if the header connecting the ports to the motherboard didn't come loose.

Thanks for the suggestion.

This is true of both the backplate jacks and the case front jacks, so it is unlikely that both came loose.
