usb sound cards - any good ?

I think my old Creative Labs PCI internal sound card has bitten the dust.

Instead of replacing the internal sound card, can I use one of these USB sound card devices that I am seeing ? Are they any good ? Is there any particular brand which would be better than others ?

Can I use one of those USB sound card devices to drive my current Creative Labs 2.1 speaker system ?

Yes you can. I have used a 2NX modulke with a laptop for several years. It does very well. The newer ones should be even better.
 
Used one 18 months ago for a couple weeks. I was surprised by the simple setup and decent Audio quality. Just plug it in and a few seconds later your good to go. No Drivers or anything required. Although better ones might require Drivers.
