USB SD card reader not working

I have a 6in1 SD card reader. I was trying to move some photos off a SD card to my PC, but when I plug the USB in, it shows up as 4 HDs, and gives me a "must format to use" error message. I even tried formating, which results in an error message. Hardwar Manager claims upto date drivers. I use Vista 64. Ideas?

Don't know about the error but its common for a system to ID the card reeader as 2 or more hard drives.

I'm using a microSD within SD adapter card, FWIW.

Any ideas what to do? I haev a bunch of photos for work I can't access on my phone and Micro SD card.

Do MicroSD cards need to be formatted before use with a PC?
I formatted another new SD card, and tried that one, but my phone can't read it now.
