USB probs

My usb ports don't seem to work. They were both fine 2 days ago, and I have no idea what's up.

They both still have power, as both my gamepad and my Pocket PC cradle are powered, but Windows just doesn't recognise either HID.

The USB root hubs and universal serial bus controllers are both present and problem free in device manager. I checked and USB support is enabled in bios.

Any ideas?

BTW, I reformated and the problem is still there.

Did you try with just one USB device? Does it show then? Do you have the Window's update for USB? Does the "USB root hub" even show in the device manager?

Yeah, bith usb controllers and hubs show in the device manager, but windows still won't reconize the devices hooked into my ports. I'm gonna try re-installing all my mobo drivers, and then checking for anymore windows updates.

I forgot to mention that I'm using windows XP pro, and am on an Aopen mx36 mobo with Via chipsets.

Nope, that didn't work.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Sorry about bumping this, but It's really starting to agrivate me. Everything seems to be in order but the HID's still don't work.

What are the chances it could be a problem with hardware if the devices are still etting power?

Sorry for bumping AGIAN. Is this against the rules here? Either way, last time I bump I Promise.

XP still not recognising my usb devices. Should I try to flash the bios or anything? The only thing I can remember doing between the laxst time they worked, and when I first noticed the porblem was running Ad-Aware and deleting some registry entires. I've formated after that, so I don't think that could be the problem.

Should I flash my bios or anything? I'm giving this comp. to my parents in the summer (when I upgrade), and don't wan't to give it to them if there is ANY problem at all.

Once again, could the ports be dead if there is still power to the devices?

Thanks alot, and sorry for my persistent posting.

Hot damn, I'm not the only one with this problem. I'm running a P3 on a CUSL2 mobo, and a couple weeks ago my USB ports just stopped working out of the blue. I tried system restore to no avail. I'm also using XP Pro. Device manager reports everything is fine with the USB ports as well.

It's annoying isn't it? Is it possible it could be a driver issue or device conflict of some sort? I really have no clue what did this. Normally I'd just assume the ports got fried somehow, but since they're still giving out power (as I'm pretty sure I've said numerous times :p ) I don't know whats up.

Augh, darn tootin' it's irritating. I can't use my joystick because it's a USB device, nor my optical minidisk hookup, nor digital camera. I'm probably going to go bald soon :|

My first suspicion was that the ports fried too, but device manager reporting them as fine gives me doubts as well. I'm wondering if there's a bug in XP, maybe our machines were messed up by one of the recent security updates. *pounds head on desk*

Does your CUSL2 mobo use Via chipsets. I'm grasping at straws here, and thinking it could be a problem with the 4 in 1's.

No, it's an Intel 815E board. Though I could be mistaken in thinking the same thing affecting both of our ports, it could be the 4-in-1s in your box, and something else in mine. I'm hoping it's a common problem that could have a simple fix for both of these things though!

A few days after this problem started happening, the usual "hardware found" balloon popped up, saying it found my joystick. But then I went to the game controllers dialog to see if it was working, and it didn't show up. Haven't seen any balloons since =\

Yeah, I'm really hoping its just a bug in XP. Hmmm....maybe I should e-mail MS.

Have you switched physical ports on your USB hub/MB? I had a problem with 2000 server where I unpluged a device (wireless AP) without stopping it and had problems getting the system to pick it back up. ended up putting something else in it's USB port and then I was able to get everything working. it's almost like the drivers remember which USB port the devices are on.

I've had USB problems in Win98SE before too. It's weird, nothing is said to be wrong but it wouldn't pick up my mouse or anything. I had to go back to my ps2 mouse. How long have you had your WinXP installed? Maybe it's time for a reformat/reinstall.

Well, Thanks for the help guys, but I still can't seem to fix the problem. I might just have to get a comp. store to look at it before I transfe r it to my parents.

On a side note, are there any USB hubs/cards or anything like that which do not use a PCI port? My POS comp only has 2 PCI ports, and I have a feeling My parents might need them with the DSL modem, and a network card.

Thanks.

In XP, under the properties for the root hub, there is a power tab. See if it shows your devices there. It should show anything that is plugged in. Also, check VID keys in the registry under USB. Should be one for every device. If all else fails, try a powered USB hub....

the same thing happened to me a few days ago on my abit kr7a. I reset the cmos about 3-4 times because I ran out of things to do. After the 4th time i booted up and the USB ports worked fine.

you gotta go in your case and there is a jumper on the motherboard near the battery but look in your manual to see which one it is for sure,
unplug your computer, move the jumper for a few seconds, move it back, plug in the computer, turn it on and go into the bios and load the defaults
