USB problems

My USB ports were working fine until about a week ago, when I plugged in a joystick using a gameport->USB convertor, and now the USB ports don't work at all, including the front header. When I plug in a mouse, the light will flash for a second, but then it'll just go dead. Nothing I plug in brings up a new hardware found screen like it used to. I thought the ports might be dead, but the mice still flash for a second, like the drivers aren't installed.
