USB problems on KT7

Hey all,

Here's the deal:

I have an MS optical mouse which I KNOW works. I am running Windows 2000 on a KT7 RAID with a Duron 700 (not overclocked yet.)
WHen I installed Win2K, the mouse worked fine with it. Now, when I boot up, the mouse immediately turns off when I actually get into the OS. However, it still says it is installed properly. I have figured out that it is a USB problem, and not anything else, because when I disable, then re-enable the PCI to USB controller in device manager, the mouse immediately turns on and works again. --But only for a few minutes, when, for seemingly no reason at all, it will shut back off. I can always get it to work again by just disabling and re-enabling it.
Obviously, this is a problem.

I AM running the VIA USB filter drivers 1.08, I HAVE installed the 4-in-1 patch, I HAVE "assign IRQ for USB" enabled in the BIOS, and I have checked out the go.to.kt7faq site.

If anyone can help (which I imagine could only be possible if you had this problem yourself), I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks,

Ricky

Well if it's any consolation...

Have exactly the same configuration. Run a dual boot system, 98se/win2k on a kt7-raid. Got the intellimouse optical (the newest of the 3 opticals, 4 buttons but standard sized.

In 98 it works fine usb or ps2. In win2k no go, no matter what I screw around with. I gave up and put it back in the ps2 port & cranked it up to 200mhz. Seems as good as or better response as it was usb, so shrugged and went on.

It's almost certainly an error on VIA's part. I have been unable to get either my Umax 2100U USB scanner or Epson 740 USB printer working correctly. I can get partial functionality out of them, but that's it. Let's just hope that VIA can come up with a new driver that can fix these problems.

I have virutally the same problem KT7raid/800 T'bird/USB Modem in Win98se.
I have ADSL and after usually 2-4 mins, the modem powers down and refuses to come back on, only solutions is to reboot (but it won't let windows shut down properly so a reset is neccessary)
I've tried all the 'so called' upgrades...

I used this FAQ for info http://go.to/kt7faq
and used "Leaked 4in1 drivers latest version 4.25a (updated 11 September 2000 at VIA hardware, but install problem with Windows98SE only)" and click on the link
I installed both the VIA 4-in-1 and the USB filter driver.

But oh no, this doesn't work either, it claims to install version 4.25a, but seems to fail misserably...
After installing and checking the Device Manager and checking the version numbers on the Driver File details of the USB Root Hubs and VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB it claims the Vendors are Microsoft and version 4.10!!!

What the hell is going on...

Sod hoping! If you bought a car and the steering wheel was faulty but supplied by say Momo, you would complain to the car manufacturer and be mighty annoyed if they refused because it wasn't their problem, they didn't make the steering wheel.
I'm sick of Fob Offs and passing the buck, come on Boffins, sort this out, give people what they've ALREADY paid for!!!!!!!!

I've tried till I'm blue in the face to get this sorted, Whether it be VIA with Non Standard drivers (they are non standard if they don't work, and they DON'T work!) or Abit for not fully testing the VIA chipset before deciding to integrate it or Bill Gates' crew for dodgy USB support.
This is a well received Mobo, so surely this must be address...

PS anyone got the address of the Head Honcho at VIA, I'm a Farmer and intend to dump a lorry load of Cow Exhaust over his front door if I don't get this sorted, :D
Anyway, I paid good money for this 10/10 board and expect Everything bar Nothing to work...
If anyone has since sorted this problem please let me know before VIA boss get Sludged on.
Now then will I get a reply with my xxxth attempt at getting some joy from a Bulletin Board..
Please help, I feel ripped off!

<< why not just use it as a ps2 mouse? whats teh difference? >>

I take it your not answering to my prob, however I think your missing the point, if the mouse works on PS2 it should work on USB too.
What if he buys a USB Scanner, printer or camera, the problem will still be there.
Ignoring the problem won't make it go away!

Hey Guys not sure if this helps, but saw this post and went searching for a solution, these are drivers for the KT133 chipset. They inculde several win2k drivers, inculding a usb filter driver to enable usb functions in win2k.

Let me know if this works.

Thanks, but no...
Tried this well before I posted...
Unless there's some underhand way of forcing Windows 98se to use these drivers, ie meesing with the registry (Urg) they don't work, and windows decides itself that the ones it had originally are better.
Money back time me thinks, Abit don't care, VIA dont care, and M$ are M$ so Asus it is...
Why are products like this available that cleary don't work properly, a simple recognition of the problem from VIA or whoever would be enough in most cases to set peoples minds at rest, but no chance, you paid for it so tough!

I had a similar problem when my usb camera all of a sudden stopped responding, I knew that it made a power connection, but could not connect to it, I pulled out and reinstalled everything that was usb and still had the same problem. I suspect that the problem was when I installed a graphics program that probably installed a twain driver different than my cam's so I reinstalled my cam's software which reinstalled the twain driver and it was fine go figure.

So sometimes even when everything is working fine you may be installing other components or software that may affect devices already working fine, did you try re-installing your mouse software.

Hi,

I saw a similar post in the Abit newsgroup on Usenet. There were a lot of people complaining about the same problem. It seems to be a problem with Abit KT7. But I can't comment further, because I cant access the newsgroup anymore, because our news server is down! If you ever need internet in Holland! Don't get Chello ;)

I sort of had the same problem with my Intellimouse Explorer and my KT7-RAID. I did a format of my hard drive, and installed Win98SE. Sometimes, my mouse would lock up when the Windows desktop would show up, and a reboot would usually solve the problem. Also seemed like if I moved the mouse around the screen while it was loading the startup programs, it wouldn't lock up. Weird, no???

I have since installed a fresh version of WinME, and haven't had the problem since. Probaly just a software glitch.

also, designdawg, did you install SP1? I recall that fixed some VIA related issues.
