USB Problem

Alrighty, I bought a new Canon BJC-2100, which has a USB connection. I also have a Microsoft IntelliEye Optical mouse that is USB. It has always worked fine. I hooked up the printer, installed the drivers, and restarted. Ahhhhhh, and I get the blue screen of death! I rebooted, and I get an error message saying, "Windows Protection Error. You must restart." And I keep getting this message. It will only let me boot into Safe Mode. I put the PS2 adapter on the mouse, and put it in their, and now it works fine. Is this an IRQ problem or what? And how can I fix it? I would appreciate it.

In most cases, for multiple USB devices I recommendusing a hub.

Next, do not connect the Canon printer . . . boot your machine just like you did before you had this problem.

When the system is up and running, turn on the printer and hot plug it in. Windows should then see the device and put you through the drivers routine.

Normally, you install them FIRST . . . before ever connecting the hardware . . . then do the hot plug bit.

Canon printers have always posed a problem for me because of their "Canon Printing System" that gets overly involved with the operating system.

USB devices do not normally cause a IRQ conflict because the USB Root Hub uses one IRQ. Without an external USB hub, you could be running into a power problem because without an externally powered hub, each USB device sucks up power from your system.

I also have the M$ Optical mouse, but I connect it to the PS/2 port, not USB. That way it uses IRQ 12 which nothing else does. Also, it is available on a DOS boot whereas USB is not.

corky-g,

Thanx. I think I will just leave my mouse in the PS/2 port so I will not run into anymore problems.
