OK. Here is the problem I'm having with my new P5B. Only one out of the ten USB ports works correctly. I can plug and unplug any USB device on that one port and things work fine, but not with any of the others. I can however boot using a USB key from any of the ports. If I turn off the computer I can insert the USB key into any port, boot back up; the BIOS will detect it and it will work in Windows. Until I unplug it and try to plug it back in. Then it is no longer recognized. This only occurs with the USB key though as the USB mouse and joystick only work on the one port and none others even if they are plugged in before I boot up.
Troubleshooting:
This problem occurred previously and I thought it might be a hardware failure. So I RMA'd the motherboard. Newegg didn't have any boards in stock so they gave me a refund. 1 week later they were back in stock so I ordered another one. Same problem with this one.
The following troubleshooting steps were tried with both boards. None of which fixes the problem.
1. Update the BIOS to version 0806.
2. Completely reformat and reinstall Windows.
3. Tried the chipset drivers from the CD.
4. Reformatted then tried the chipset drivers from the ASUS website.
5. Reformatted then tried the chipset drivers from the Intel website.
6. Have tried several different BIOS settings for the USB system, all to no avail.
7. Danced naked around a bon fire and sacrificed a virgin to the computer gods. (ok, not really)
I have no idea what could be causing this problem. Google searches turns up basically nothing. Anyone have an idea of something I could try?
Update:
On a suggestion I tried using a USB hub. If the hub is plugged in before I boot up the computer anything I plug and unplug from the hub works perfectly. However if I unplug the hub and try to plug it back in it does not work.
Any other ideas?
