USB problem..computer freezes on install of drivers.. help plz

Hi Guys and Gals... I have a small/potentially big problem...
Ok.. I just go a new mobo (Iwill BD133) + new cpu (celeron 633) to replace my old mobo (Asus MEW-LM) and cpu (celeron 333) .. so first i removed video drivers and sound (different video card/ onboard sound) then swapped the mobo/cpu...

windows restarts fine (overclock at 950) so i proceed to load new drivers for the new chipset (inf files supplied by manufacturer for 815ep compared to 810+vga on the old mobo) and it starts finding all sorts of motherboard resources... the last one to load is the second USB controller ( USB Universal Host Controller - 2444) and it FREEZES... and stays there... so i cold reboot, and disable usb in the bios.. and windows come up fine and finishes installing all other drivers (video/sound..etc) .. when its done i reboot and set the cpu to default (633) and reenable USB in bios and guess what... freezes once more when it tries to load software for the 2nd USB controller... disable usb in bios and it restarts fine so i reboot in safe mode and remove all the entries for the usb in the system and reboot with usb enabled... and it freezes again when trying the 2nd usb controller... after installing like 4 other usb related drivers ( Root, 1st USB controller..etc..)

So as of now.. no usb on that machine...

Im stumped... anybody has an idea...

Whenever you change mobo's it's always best to format and re-install windows...thats probably a good reason your having problems.

Formatting and reloading windows is right of now my last option... Its the comp my wife uses and she has tons of stuff loaded on it... its gonna be a pain to reinstall everything... but I will if necessary... thanks for the heads up...

you could try that registry trick....never tried it... you boot in safe mode and go in registry and delete the folder called "ENUM" reboot and it should find and install all your devices....probably a good idea to before you reboot to go in msconfig and remove all startup programs, so that way nothing conflicts.....not sure what else to tell you.

UPDATE:

I installed windows on a spare drive I had laying around (325 MB) and it detected and installed the two USB controllers fine... so I looks like I'll be reinstalling windows on the drive on that machine.. have to backup everything first..

samgau, I believe I had the exact same problem as you did. For me, it turned out to be an IRQ sharing problem. The USB was sharing an IRQ with the network card. So when I disabled the network card, it worked fine, but with the network card, the maching froze. I couldn't find a way to change the IRQ of the NIC (it wouldn't let me), but what I was able to do was update the drivers for it, and this fixed the problem. Apparently the old NIC drivers didn't like sharing of IRQs, now the USB and NIC share the same IRQ flawlessly.

I'm just throwing this out as one final option if you haven't reformated yet, you may want to try to disable other nonessential components of your system (NIC, sound card, etc) temporarily to see if there's a conflict through that.

I also found out that it has duplicated the nic... and i have tried already to fix it.. removing one.. then reinstalling .. it just redetected it.. remove the other.. reboot.. redetected it... removed both... machine nearly died.. wouldn't boot normally into windows.. had to boot into safe mode and manually install the nic.. reboot.. guess what.. I had 2 nics again.. its a pain.. I'll try the different options listed above.. and see if it works... if it does not i'll just reinstall..
