USB POWER PROBLEM

Hi all,

Currently using ABIT KT7 RAID motherboard with AMB TBIRD 1GHZ, I am encountering the following problem:

I use two USB peripherals, a MS optical mouse and an Alcatel DSL modem.

The optical mouse powers off all by itself every five to ten minutes. And then powers back on again. Now where this becomes ultimately enfuriating is when the DSL modem powers off, simultaneously with the mouse but not every time the mouse powers off. When they both power off together, then neither one powers back on, as if stuck. Even when I disconnect and reconnect, disable and re-able, nothing happens. The only way is to turn off the computer and reboot, which by the way is giving ideas of computer murder.

Anyway, I am interested in shared experience, and if any, a possible solution to this nightmare as I am fed up with interruptions while connected to the net.

Take care

Isolate the problem by either doing what Obenton or Baldy recommended. You could be overloading the USB power supplies which keeps on tripping on you and then resetting. Most likely the the modem is the big power gustler but you can start with the mouse by converting it to PS2 and see if the problem goes away. If you have to have both on USB then buy a powered USB hub.

Just curious - what's your PSU?

I presume you're a European DSL user - Alcatel DSL modems don't usually overload the system. The cause is usually bad USB implementation, bad PSU, etc.

I'd second obenton's suggestion in BORROWING a powered USB hub. If that doesn't work, try a PCI USB board with an Opti chipset.

thanks all for your help.

Actually found the problem myself, it originates from the MB which is ABIT KT7 RAID using a VIA chipset controlling USB. Well apparently VIA's chipset has a problem with USB, so I installed the new bios and other stuff from ABIT's website and now it all works fine.
