USB port on motherboard is not functioning

my neighbor's only USB port is not working and he has a USB printer that does not have a parallel connection on the printer.

other than replacing the mobo (not going to happen) or installing a jet direct card (could happen), is there another alternative method for printing?

sorry, but I do not have the model numbers for either the printer or the computer. but I can get them if it's necessary.

I know there is a parallel to USB converter out there, but I cannot find a USB to parallel converter. is such a thing available, and if so, where might I find one.

thanks in advance.

Do you think the mobo is bad? Is usb enabled and updated? I once had a Epox board that had to have a powered hub, before any usb stuff would work and they said it was the nature of the beast.

if it is indeed unfixable, why not just get a 4 port usb hub add on? That's your best bet since it would be the cheapest alternative I think.

Probably like what Horsepower said, not enable and/or drivers not installed.

From the large number of USB-parallel converter I've seen in the "return item" box at Microcenter, I would surmise they don't work too well.

John Paul - How do you use 4-port hub add-on when most add-on hubs needs to connect to the existing/working USB port? Wouldn't you want to go with a internal USB card.

1. Ensure that it's turned on in Bios and drivers are installed within windows
If this fails...
2. If you know someone with a powered hub, try plugging this in and see if it works/gets detected.
If this fails...
3. Time for a USB card...if he not likely to get many/any more USB devices then 2 port ones are cheap as hell...mind you 4 port ones aren't much more!

Edit: only 1 USB port total on the board?....weird!
