USB or PS2 mouse for a gamer

What is better to use.. usb or ps2 for the mouse.

Once you push the sampling rate of the mouse to 100Hz on a ps/2 mouse (logitech mouse drivers), it's pretty much a draw.

god i hate usb kb/mice .. i just dont really like the idea of loading drivers for a kb or mouse at all .. probably just me though ..

I have Logitech Dual Optical on PS/2 and I upped the sample rate to 200 Hz. Can this have a negative effect on anything?

I have an MS optical and the USB is a lot smoother. I think there are some methods where you can enhance the PS/2 sample rate, but I like having my system legacy free (even if it's just not using any legacy devices). I wish Asus would come out with a completely legacy free motherboard. That way I won't be bogged down by old technology like the whole industry seems to be. I don't like macs, but I've got to give it to Apple for comming out with an entirely legacy free computer, even if it is just a colorful doorstop or a fancy tissue box.

neural, u have load drivers for ps/2 mice as well...

i save an IRQ and disable the ps/2 port and use USB instead...that's really the only advantage i can see from using USB.

some claim that USB has a higher cpu overhead than ps/2, but i'm not sure the argument holds for ps/2 at high refresh rates...and even so, on modern computers it's a rather moot point.

Yeh....sounds like a bit of overkill unless you have some really fast fingers!!!

Wow, i just read what you people said and changed my mouse from PS/2 to USB and it is a lot smoother. However, how would i up the hertz on the ps/2 port?

No matter which port you use (USB or PS/2) you need a keyboard and mouse driver. I personally like USB because of its simplicity and the fact that all my USB devices are taking 1 IRQ - which really isn't a good argument these days.

I just tested out whether PS/2 or USB takes more CPU power. PS/2 with sampling rate of 200 uses 3-5% while USB can use up to 20%. However, even at sampling rate of 200, i feel the USB is smoother. But since it takes more CPU power, i'm not gonna use USB and am gonna stick to ps/2 w/ sampling rate of 200. BTW, can a sampling rate that high do any damage or give me a performance hit anyhow?

Just do a search for ps2rate in google or your favorite search engine.

I prefer a PS/2 mouse to a USB one, and I still prefer a mechanical mouse (I use the MS wheel mouse basic) to an optical mouse - cannot get used to the different way you have to control an optical mouse when gaming.
