I've always had better luck with USB gamepads/joysticks. Gameport devices generally require a driver to work. Most USB gamespads or joysticks are HID compatible and do not always require a driver outside of the generic HID driver Windows comes with.
And of course, the game port is next on the list of legacy ports that are going to vanish. Many mainboards have it removed already, in favor of more USB, sound, and firewire.
