I downloaded and was running Trend Micro Virus scan.
Halfway through my USB hard drive stopped working.
Shortly thereafter my USB mouse stopped working.

Complete shutdown and reboot, no effect.

Switching devices to different ports, no effect.

Under control panel it shows that Windows stopped the USB controller from working 'because it has reported problems.'

Windows does not have any 'reset' or 'change settings' that can be used. Hitting properties shows 'changes settings' clicking on change settings goes to 'properties'

Tried troubleshooting and window's solution is to turn my webcam on.

Which is not a USB device and has nothing to do with my mouse or external hard drive.

Yay windows....

The laptop is about 2 months old.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

If you have a recovery disk use it. Sounds like the virus scan may have deleted key USB drivers. If you can get to the manufactures web site and download and install the main board drivers it may be able to fix the problem.

Where in control panel are you seeing the USB shutdown because of errors at?

Device Manager. "Unknown Device"

Now Device Manager says the USB controller is working correctly. It no longer recognizes anything I plug in, like a mouse.

It gives a (Code 43) whatever that is.

Fixed it.

I did an uninstall of all devices.

Then I switched the devices to different ports.

Only then did windows begin to recognize them again.

Then I switched the devices back to the original ports.

Funny how system restore didn't work either.

It sounds like something happened to one of your device drivers for one of your USB devices. This caused a crash in the USB controllers enumeration pool. You were right in disconnecting all USB devices that is how you fix the problem, it is also sometimes necessary to leave all devices disconnected, log off and shutdown system, then restart and let the PC and Windows reenumerate the USB ports and that will correct it.

Hi, I have the same USB problem (Code 43) and have tried everything I’ve found on the internet: uninstalled the drives in device manager, updated BIOS, updated all drives both on Windows and HP (I’m using Compaq Presario CQ40-121TU on Windows 7), did system restore to the day before the problem started. I’ve been using Windows 7 for about 2 months with no problems, and then couple of days ago it suddenly didn’t recognise any of the laptop’s 3 ports. It powers the devices up but doesn’t recognise them. I’ve tried all of the devices (mouse, Kingston, iPhone, camera) on another laptop working on XP and have no problems. I’m completely at wits end! Can anyone help me?
